DAVANGERE: S. Manjappa, head of the department of Environment Science and Technology, at the Bapuji Institute of Engineering and Technology, has stressed the need to establish co-generation sugar factories which would help provide power to the rural areas. Dr. Manjappa, who delivered a lecture here on Friday, said that about 400 MW of power was being generated by over 500 sugar factories in the country. “They have the potential of generating 8,000 MW,” he added. Dr. Manjappa said that there was an urgent need to encourage sugar factories to establish co-generation plants for the development of rural areas. The sugar factories are expected to generate about 2,000 MW of power by the end of this year, he said. Dr. Manjappa said that sugar factories had also been generating over 200 million litres of alcohol. He noted that there was a demand for 450 million litres of alcohol in the country in which the sugar factories could play a part.
