Five assaulted on way to court

Special Correspondent

VILLUPURAM: Five persons, who were travelling by van to the Tindivanam court to seek bail in an assault case, were waylaid by a gang and attacked on Friday.

All the five, E. Nagendran (45), Kesavalu (43), Venkatesh (38), Udhayasankar (38) and Jayaraman (62), were admitted as in-patients to the Tindivanam Government Hospital.

Negendran sustained a cut injury on the head and others sustained fractures in the hands and legs. They alleged that a gang led by S. Charles (40) attacked them.

According to the police, previous enmity between two groups could be the cause for the attack. Recently, certain persons indulging in arrack trade at Siruvadi, allegedly beat up Charles, suspecting him to be a police informer. Following the incident, the police arrested two persons and others who had gone underground, sought to move the bail petition on Friday. The police have launched the hunt for the attackers.
