At Tirupattur, residents fume at lack of streetlights

Staff Reporter

“Thefts are common in Housing Board Colony Phase 1, especially in evenings”

TIRUPATTUR: The absence of adequate streetlights in Housing Board Colony Phase 1 has left the residents fuming. They allege that thefts have become common in the area, especially in the evenings.

T.K. Kennedy, a resident of Indira Nagar near Housing Board Colony, says incidents of chain-snatching occur frequently near the foot over-bridge that spans the rail track. This year alone, more than three incidents of chain-snatching have occurred. Miscreants take advantage of women of Velan Nagar, Thayappan Nagar and Indira Nagar coming to the colony to buy grocery. Furthermore, Mr. Kennedy says, the anti-social elements buy liquor from a TASMAC outlet located in the colony and swig it near the bridge, which is not used by the residents of Velan Nagar, Thayappan Nagar and Indira Nagar. The residents’ plea for deploying a policeman near the bridge has failed. But the police claim that the night patrol has been intensified in the area, and they mount a vigil in the colony.

Mr. Kennedy says that after a great deal of pressure, the panchayat installed a mercury lamp close to the bridge, but it was later removed. Likewise, the residents have been demanding a streetlight near the Vinayagar temple at Velan Nagar. And this plea has also gone in vain. Thayappan Nagar and Indira Nagar, too,go without adequate streetlights. All the areas are plunged into darkness.
