Police attack in Kollam unprovoked, say leaders

Bloodied: A KSU activist injured in a police action in Kollam on Friday.

KOLLAM: Nine activists of the Kerala Students’ Union (KSU) were hospitalised following police action during Friday’s education ‘bandh’ in the district.

Four activists were admitted to the district hospital and five to the Kottarakara taluk hospital.

In Kollam city, a group of KSU activists barged into the Mulankadakam government higher secondary school campus and raised slogans in protest against a class for resource persons being held there. The activists were stopped by a police posse as they moved towards the classroom demanding that the class be dispersed.

The KSU leaders alleged that they were raising slogans after being stopped when the police attacked them unprovoked. An activist, Vinod Kannankara, fell unconscious when he was attacked by a police officer with a wireless set. This led to a scuffle between the police and the KSU activists in which three other activists were also injured.

The police denied that a police officer hit Vinod with a wireless set. They said he was injured in the scuffle.

Violence erupted at Kottarakara during a demonstration by KSU activists in front of the office of the District Education Officer there. The KSU leaders alleged that the police lathi-charged their activists when they were raising slogans. Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala called on the injured KSU activists at the district hospital in the evening.
