State now fourth biggest exporter in the country Incentives planned to set up industries in rural areas
Top exporters: Some of the winners of the Export Excellence awards at a function organised by the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Bangalore on Friday. BANGALORE: Minister for Small-scale Industries and Sericulture Venkataramanappa on Friday advised exporters to aim at creating more job opportunities by maximising their export potential. Export does not mean mere earning of foreign exchange. It should also aim at encouraging the manufacturing sector and creating more employment opportunities, Mr. Venkataramanappa said after presenting Export Excellence awards instituted by the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) here. During 2007-08, exports from the State crossed an estimated Rs. 1.20 lakh crore, and the computation of figures is on. Karnataka is now the fourth biggest exporter in the country, he said. Mr. Venkataramanappa said the State Government would come out with development-friendly and minimum-restrictions policies with regard to investment, taxation and establishment of small-scale industries. The Department of Industries and Commerce would strive to create an environment conducive to increasing the export potential, he assured exporters. 42 winnersThe Minister presented Star Exporter awards to Rajesh Exports Ltd. (manufacturing category), MMTC Ltd. (merchant category) and Infosys Technologies Ltd. (services category). Forty-two exporters from different categories and districts were presented awards. Later, Mr. Venkataramanappa told presspersons that the Government would provide incentives to entrepreneurs who set up industries in rural areas and generated employment opportunities. FKCCI president S.S. Patil, in his welcome address, urged the Minister to ensure that the second edition of the State Export Policy was announced immediately. The five-year Export Policy, introduced in 2002, lapsed in 2007. He said the proposed Bangalore-Mumbai industrial corridor would provide an impetus for increasing foreign direct investment (FDI) to establish industries on both sides of the corridor.
