JAIPUR: Congress general secretary Ashok Gehlot on Friday demanded a CBI probe into what he called the “mysterious” circumstances under which the Gujjar agitation for Scheduled Tribe status took off from Pilupura in Bayana tehsil of Bharatpur district on May 23. “A CBI enquiry may expose the forces within the State Government who were prompting the agitation,” he said. In a statement here, the former Chief Minister said it was a happy development that the violent agitation, which claimed 41 lives this time around, was finally over. However, now it must be made public what prompted the Gujjar leadership to launch the agitation at Pilupura when there was a function already scheduled at Patoli in Dausa district on May 29 to mark the first anniversary of the killing of 26 persons in police firing last year. “If the Rajasthan Government had to come out with this kind of agreement it could have been achieved without sacrificing the lives of innocent Gujjars and the police personnel,” Mr. Gehlot noted.
