Udupi: The general body meeting of the Udupi City Municipal Council here on Friday began with a demand for a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the alleged suicide of Padmapriya Bhat, wife of Udupi MLA K. Raghupati Bhat, by the Opposition Congress. Raising the issue as soon as the Council meeting began, Councillor Anandi of the Congress said that Padmapriya had died in suspicious circumstances in New Delhi. If this was the fate which befell a MLA’s wife, the plight of the common man could well be imagined. Hence the CMC should pass a resolution seeking for a CBI probe into Padmapriya Bhat’s death, she said. Councillor Mohan Upadhyaya said that the matter did not come under the purview of the CMC. Another councillor M.R. Pai said that when the former MLAs such as Chittaranjan and Nagappa had died, nobody had sought a CBI probe into their death in the Council meeting. To which, Ms. Anandi shot back: “I am a woman. I want a probe into the alleged suicide of another woman — Padmapriya Bhat. Besides Padmapriya Bhat belongs to Udupi, while the others — Chittaranjan and Nagappa — do not belong to Udupi. Let there be a CBI probe in other cases also.”
