Means-cum-merit scholarship scheme for Haryana students

Special Correspondent

Scholarships will be paid from Class IX to Class XII for a period of four years

These scholarships would be provided quarterly to the selected students

‘The State Government has decided to conduct the examination on August 17’

CHANDIGARH: The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development has decided to give scholarships of Rs.6,000 per year each to 2,337 meritorious and gifted students of Haryana studying as regular students in Class IX in government, local body and government-aided schools.

The scholarships, under the Centrally-sponsored National Means-Cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme, will be paid from Class IX to Class XII for a maximum period of four years.

Parental income

An official spokesman said here on Friday that the scholarships would be given to students whose parental income was not more than Rs.1.50 lakh per year from all sources.

He said the fixed quota of scholarship of 2,337 students had been decided on the basis of enrolment of students in Class VII and VIII in the State and population of children of concerned age group of Class VII and VIII.

These scholarships would be provided quarterly to the selected students.

The spokesman said that since each State would have to conduct its own test for selection of students for the award of the Means-cum-Merit Scholarship, the State Government had decided to conduct the examination on August 17 for nominating the students for the national level (second stage) examination to be conducted by the NCERT.

He said that the examination on August 17 would be conducted for students who had passed Class VIII during the academic session 2007-08 and were studying in Class IX during the 2008-09 session. On the basis of the State-level examination, a merit list would be prepared according to the fixed quota of each district.

Application date

The last date to apply for the examination is July 21 and application forms are being made available in the offices of District Education Officers from June 16 onward. The students would have to submit the applications forms at the respective examination centre of the district.

The State Level Examination would consist of Mental Ability Test (MAT) and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). The Mental Ability Test would consist of 90 multiple-choice questions testing verbal and non-verbal meta-cognitive abilities like reasoning and critical thinking.

Aptitude test

The questions in the test would be on analogy, classification, numerical series, pattern perception and hidden figures.

The Scholastic Aptitude Test would consist of 90 multiple-choice questions covering science, social studies and mathematics as taught in classes VII and VIII.

The duration of each test would be 90 minutes. Physically Challenged children would be given 30 minutes extra for each test.
