Letters to the Editor
Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray’s call for the creation of Hindu suicide squads is disturbing. For a nation that is already reeling under multiple problems such as inflation and terrorist attacks, irresponsible comments like these will do no good. Creation of Hindu suicide squads to counter “Islamic terrorism” is not a solution to the problem. It will become another problem by itself resulting in large-scale destruction of lives and properties. Mr. Thackeray is treading a dangerous path. B. Harish, Mangalore R. Srinivasan, Chennai No sane Indian can think of making the kind of remarks Mr. Thackeray made about Hindu suicide squads. They should be treated with the contempt they deserve. Unfortunately, Mr. Thackeray still has a following in Maharashtra and no one opposes him for fear of retaliation. Unless the government takes the bull by its horns, Mr. Thackeray will continue to make such vicious statements. H.K. Seshadri, Bangalore He would do well to remember that violence breeds violence, and more violence still more violence, resulting in a vicious circle from which it is difficult to come out. A better alternative would be the enactment of a strict law against terrorism and a scrupulous enforcement thereof. B. Premananda Bhat, Manipal
