“No change in Left’s stand on nuclear deal”

Special Correspondent

Kolkata: There will be no change in the stand of the Left parties on the India-United States nuclear deal, veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu said here on Friday.

Answering questions from newspersons on the efforts being made by the United Progressive Alliance government to operationalise the deal, Mr. Basu said whatever the case might be “we shall not budge from our stand.”

Leaders of the Left parties are opposed to the deal and have asserted that the Centre should not proceed to seek the approval of the text of the India-specific safeguards agreement from the International Atomic Energy Agency.

On the future of the deal, Mr. Basu said: “Nothing has been finalised as yet as far as I know. I have no idea what compromise they [the Centre] are trying to make [with the Left parties]. But our stand is quite clear on the issue.” He was speaking after emerging from a meeting of the State Secretariat of the CPI(M).
