Taekwondo National referees seminar

BANGALORE: The Taekwondo Federation of India (TFI) will hold a National referees seminar, National sub-junior, junior and senior championship and a National open taekwondo meet.

The Open championship, which begins on June 25, is expected to attract over 2,000 participants from all over the country.

Briefing the media about the TFI’s activities, Harish Kumar, IPS, President, TFI, said that the Indian stock has soared in the sport and added: “we were ranked around 140 in the World and now we have moved up nearly 100 places in the ladder and thanks to our Iranian coach, Fariboz Askan’s efforts, our contestants are giving a good account of themselves in the international arena.”

Contract extended

The contract of Askan has been extended by another two years.

“We are also exploring the possibility of getting one more foreign coach for our teams,” Kumar added.

He said the TFI would constantly strive to give a better exposure to Indian players and it plans to send an eight-member team to the Asian Children’s championship at Yakutia, Russia, starting on July 3.

He said that India would host the Commonwealth championship in 2010.

Taekwondo has also been included as a major discipline by the School Games Federation of India, said Kumar.

League cricket

The Karnataka State Cricket Association, Dharwad Zone, will conduct league matches at Hubli to select the under-22 team for the inter-zonal tournament (S.A. Srinivasan Trophy) at Bangalore in the month of July.

The matches for Hubli, Dharwad, Belgaum, Gadag and Karwar cities would be held from June 22 to July 1.
