On the warpath: A large number of evicted tribal activists of the CPI(M) demonstrating before the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bhubaneswar, on Friday. BHUBANESWAR: Demanding protection for tribal families residing on about 200 acres of land on the outskirts of capital city, members of Odisha Adivasi Mahasabha, a wing of Communist Party of India (Marxist), staged a demonstration here on Friday. About 300 activists took out a rally demanding action against miscreants who attacked them on June 15. They raised slogans against police inactiveness before the office of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Bhubaneswar. The rally threw the traffic on busy Janpath Road to a grinding halt. They alleged that some real estate developers had ganged up with lower level government official and an elected member and tried to evict the tribals who had been living on patch of land for years. Land conflictsSaal Mandi, president of the outfit, said they had been seeking record of rights on the land under Andharua panchayat in Khurda district since 1960, but majority of them had been denied. The Revenue Department should constitute a committee to investigate into land conflicts and protect interest of tribals, he said. Moreover, the people who had been facing wrath of land mafias should be given adequate police protection.
