Coimbatore: A worker involved in cleaning a septic tank was asphyxiated while the other swooned at a house at Duraisamy Layout, near Nava India, on Friday. It is learnt that Devaraj of Kethanur, near Palladam, had rented out his house in Peelamedu area. Following the septic tank overflowing, two workers, Ananthan of Mettupalayam (22) and Arumugam (35) of Valparai, were hired on Friday to clean it. While doing the work, Ananthan died of asphyxiation and Arumugam swooned. The Peelamedu police and personnel from the fire and rescue services department recovered the body of Ananthan and rescued Arumugam. Safety measuresThe personnel said that while cleaning septic tanks, the public should employ trained and skilled personnel and ensure that adequate safety measures were undertaken. ImmolationThe Race Course Police are probing the death of Sharmila (27), wife of Rajendran (29) of Gandhipuram area, at a burial ground in Red Fields area on Friday. It is learnt that the victim had allegedly doused kerosene on herself and set herself ablaze. BlockedResidents of Masjid Colony, near Ukkadam bypass road, blocked the Valankulam railway overbridge demanding public convenience facilities. The police officials held talks with the residents. Finally, following assurance from the Corporation authorities that steps would be taken to construct public toilets in their area, they dispersed.
