Hartal in Aluva today

KOCHI: Attempts by Kerala Students Union activists to disrupt classes at School of Communication and Management Studies (SCMS) on Muttom campus led to tense moments here on Friday.

Aluva police registered cases against 17 activists following violence caused after the a group of activists led by Youth Congress State secretary Mohammed Shiyas and KSU district president Thampi Subramanian forced themselves into the college premises around 11 a.m.

The protestors were demanding that SCMS stop functioning as part of the State-wide education bandh called by the KSU. The police resorted to a lathi-charge to disperse the group.

Twelve of the activists, including Mr. Shiyas and Mr. Subramanian, were admitted to Aluva taluk hospital after being injured in the melee. Youth Congress district president Eldose Kunnappally protested the decision by SCMS management to function despite the State-wide call for protests by educational institutions. The Youth Congress will observe hartal at Aluva town from 3 p.m. on Saturday and a protest meeting will be held at 4 p.m.
