Flood control room operational

NEW DELHI: The Flood Control Order-2008 was issued on Friday and the Central Flood Control Room made operational by the Delhi Government in order to meet any exigency arising due to floods in the Capital.

This was announced by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit after chairing a meeting of the Apex Committee for Flood Control at Delhi Secretariat. At the meeting, which was also attended by Development Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan and Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta besides a number of MLAs and officials, it was decided that the Divisional Commissioner would function as Convenor Secretary of the Committee, which would normally meet by the last week of June and subsequently at such times as necessitated by the exigency of flood situation.

Flood warnings

The 24-hour Central Flood Control Room has started functioning from the office of Deputy Commissioner (East). It would receive flood warnings and other related information, submit flood situation report, issue flood warnings and directions on evacuation, arrange necessary food articles and relief supplies, maintain liaison with the Upper Yamuna Division of Central Water Commission and the Army and the Navy and also maintain a fleet of vehicles needed for mobility of staff and the relief measures.

It was mentioned that as a general practice the first, second and third warning would be issued as per the danger level in the Yamuna. The warning level for the Yamuna at Old Railway bridge is 204.00 metres and the danger level 204.83 metres. The highest flood level recorded in the river was 207.49 metres in 1978.
