GUNTUR: Corporators cutting across party lines have lashed out against the civic staff at the general body meeting held here on Friday holding them responsible for stalling of developmental works in their respective divisions.

Replying at the end of an acrimonious debate on charges of corruption against the officials, Mayor Rayapati Mohan Sai Krishna has assured the corporators that a review meeting of the various developmental works taken up in the divisions would be convened shortly. Municipal Commissioner Siddhartha Jain too said a fresh impetus would be given for undertaking developmental works. Raising the matter in the question hour, TDP corporator Sk. Showkath alleged that the revenue inspector manning his division has been collecting money to show undue favours in the collection of Vacant Land Tax and demanded his immediate transfer. The corporator then took everyone by surprise by squatting in front of the Mayor’s podium.

Deputy Commissioner N. Yadagiri Rao in his reply said he would take action against the officer concerned if a written complaint along with evidence was produced.

As the war of words between the TDP corporators and the GMC officials continued, the Mayor intervened and asked the Municipal Commissioner to look into complaints and address them.

The Corporators then trained their guns against the officials by stating that the developmental works in the city have hit a road block. Leading the charge, TDP floor leader Yaganti Durga Rao said inefficiency of the civic machinery has been causing them to lose face in their divisions as even minor repair works were taking ages to complete TDP corporators M. Rajesh, Maganti Sudhakar, Sriram Prasad to echoed similar opinions. The inability of the DEE Nageswara Rao to come out with accurate figures of the division wise developmental works taken up during the last three years came in for severe criticism from all quarters. The Municipal Commissioner too gave a piece of his mind to the official and asked him to send revised summary of works to all corporators within two days.

Later, former deputy mayor T. Murali Mohan strongly pleaded with the officials to put off collection of charges being collected for regularizing the Rs.1,200 municipal tap connections from those people belonging to BPL families.
