KOCHI: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan inaugurated the solid waste treatment plant of the Kochi Corporation at Brahmapuram on Friday. The plant has the capacity to process around 300 tonnes of waste every day. This could be enhanced to 500 tonnes at a later stage. Local Administration Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty laid the foundation stone for the Refuse Derived Fuel unit that was to be set up at the site of the plant. The unit would be used for treating non-biodegradable waste like plastic. Fisheries Minister S. Sarma released the bio-manure, Jaiva Sree, made at the plant. He handed over bags of the manure to the office bearers of the Ernakulam District Residents’ Association Apex Council and Kudumbasree units. The UDF had observed a hartal in Brahmapuram on the day of the inauguration. VS to attend meetA meeting attended by Mr. Achuthanandan and Mr. Mohammed Kutty will be convened before July 13 to discuss the issues relating to dumping of non-biodegradable waste generated within the Corporation limits on the land owned by FACT at Ambalamedu, Mr. Sarma said. This is considering the fact the one-month-long permission granted by FACT authorities to dump waste in its land will expire on July 13. The Minister said that nothing would be done to hamper the development of FACT.
