TAMBARAM: Twelve-car suburban electric trains on the Chennai Beach - Chengalpattu sector began plying for the first time on Friday.
Though fast services with 12 compartments (also called cars) have been in operation on this sector for several months, this is the first time that regular services halting at all stations in this sector are being operated.
And all focus was on the Perungalathur Railway Station, where the platform is not long enough to accommodate all the 12 cars.
Southern Railway had informed in advance about the operation of the 12-car services and also informed commuters that the first three compartments in both directions would halt outside the platform.
On Friday, a good number of personnel from Southern Railway and Railway Protection Force were seen at Perungalathur, urging commuters and pedestrians to be careful.
Some of the commuters unaware of the new arrangement and who boarded the first three compartments had to jump out of them.
