200 children to undergo free heart surgery

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Around 200 children with congenital heart defects in the State will undergo free surgery in the next 12 months at Lifeline Multi-speciality Hospital, under a corporate social responsibility initiative to address highly-skilled-surgery needs of the poor. The hospital on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding with Temple University, Philadelphia, for professional exchange, including paediatric heart surgery.

P. Russo of Temple University, who has launched similar initiatives in Eastern Europe and South America, said like many doctors, he wanted to take expertise to the developing countries. In the process, the standard of healthcare in centres, where the paediatric heart surgeries are performed, also goes up for other patients.

Lifeline Multi-speciality Hospital is one of 17 private hospitals in the State selected under the government’s Young Children Heart Surgery Scheme launched in February.
