CHENNAI: The Centre will cross all hurdles in implementing the Sethusamudram project, a 150-year-old dream of Tamil Nadu, Union Minister for Shipping and Road Transport T.R. Baalu said on Friday.

Those opposing the project are “anti-Tamil,” and against the development of Tamil Nadu, he said. The project, he pointed out, was supported by all political parties at one time or the other. The opposition was “politically motivated.” His only concern was that he could not complete the project as per schedule. However, he was confident that it would become operational shortly.

Mr. Baalu released a book on the project, written by Congress leader A. Gopanna.

Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation G.K. Vasan, who received the first copy, said the project would revolutionise industrial growth in southern districts.

Those who supported the project earlier were now opposing it for political purpose, he said, and they were afraid that if the project became operational, it would affect their political prospects.

D. Sudarssanam, leader of the Congress Legislature Party, S. Peter Alphonse, Congress Whip, B.S. Gnanadesikan, MP, and S.R. Balasubramoniyan, former Union Minister, stressed the importance of the project.

Mr. Gopanna said the objective of the book was to present a clear picture of the project.
