Shortage of teachers is worrying: VITU Chancellor

Special Correspondent

VELLORE: Chancellor of VIT University G. Viswanathan has expressed concern over the shortage of teachers in educational institutions in the State.

Inaugurating the expanded air-conditioned showroom of New Century Book House at the town bus stand here on Friday, Mr. Viswanathan said it was a problem not only in schools but also professional colleges. The shortage of teachers, which was confined to the engineering colleges, was now very common in medical colleges. In some medical colleges, one teacher was taking care of the work of six. He also expressed concern over the “poor payment” given to teachers in the Colleges of Education. A teacher in a private college of education in Chennai was paid just Rs.4,000 per month, he said.

Mr. Viswanathan also deplored the waning dedication among government school teachers, who were being paid well. A teacher who was getting just Rs.4,000 a month in a private school was working hard, while those who were getting Rs.10, 000 to Rs.15, 000 at government schools were not evincing much interest in teaching.

Mr. Viswanathan urged teachers to concentrate fully on teaching. The government should concentrate on improving the standards of education in the government schools where the rural students study.

He also wanted special attention paid to slow learners. He regretted that such vital issues concerning education were not discussed in the Assembly.

C. Gnanasekharan, Vellore MLA, who presided, regretted that there were only 174 candidates from among the first 6,000 rank-holders in VIT Engineering Entrance Examination this year, whereas there were good number of candidates from Andhra Pradesh and States such as Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. This reflected the poor standards of education in Tamil Nadu. He urged the Tamil Nadu government to take steps to upgrade the syllabus of government schools and improve the performance of the students from the State. Earlier, Mr. Viswanathan released the books ‘Sweep through your Interview’ and ‘Power of Your Memory.’ T. Harigopalan, Correspondent, Sunbeam Matriculation Higher Secondary School, and K. Revathy, Principal, DKM College for Women, received the first copies. Mr. Gnanasekharan inaugurated the first sale of books, which were purchased by Hariharan, a student of the Government Vellore Medical College (GVMC).
