“No support if Centre firms up nuclear deal”

MADURAI: Left parties will withdraw support to the Centre, if the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government tries to go ahead with the proposed nuclear deal with the United States, Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader N. Sankaraiah said on Friday.

Releasing a book, ‘Singaravelu – Vazhvum, Paniyum,’ here, he said that the Left parties were not against nuclear power, but the deal stemming out of the Hyde Act. The Act, if the deal was signed, would force India to adopt the foreign policy of the US.

Alleging that the Centre was dragging its feet on negotiations with Iran on the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline, he said the government was not concerned about the energy situation of the country.

“The Centre is hesitant to finalise the deal fearing the US,” Mr. Sankaraiah said.
