Ban forward trading in maize, soya: NECC

Special Correspondent

NAMAKKAL: The Namakkal zone of the National Egg Co-ordination Committee (NECC) has urged the Union Government to provide an interest subvention of eight per cent on bank loans availed of by poultry industry to tide over its present crisis. Other than banning the forward trading and exports of maize and soya meal, the vital ingredients of poultry feed, the loan waiver would go a long way to benefit the poultry farmers, particularly of those holding small and medium enterprises. These measures, the NECC points out, are crucial for the survival of the poultry industry.

It further points out that due to this unfair practice of traders, the price of maize has touched an all-time high of Rs.1,040 a quintal. It reiterates that exports of these commodities should be carried out through a designated Government agency.

Private exporters should be banned, it demands. It also claims that the forward trading in maize and soya meal has benefited traders and hoarders only and neither the producers, here the farmers, nor the end users, the poultry industry, are benefited.

According to the U.S. Feed Grains Council, maize export during the current year is expected to touch 3 million tonnes. ave incurred huge losses. NECC points out that it is the worst crisis being faced by the industry in 30 years though the bird flu incidents in 2006 and 2008 were brief. The industry then with the help of the Government was able to recover from that setback. But the present crisis due to the steep increase in production costs, coupled with less farm-gate prices, is far more serious forcing the industry to suffer heavily for the last two years. It claims that 10 per cent of the industry – comprising mainly of small farmers – has closed down. Hence, the NECC has asked the Government to ban forward trading and export of maize and soya.
