Andhra Pradesh
It will meet the infrastructure needs of education and welfare sectors HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh government has firmed up plans to establish a new corporation exclusively to meet the infrastructure requirements of education and welfare sectors. As Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has approved the proposal, orders may be issued in a few days, say senior officials. Rachel Chatterjee, Principal Secretary, Social Welfare, told The Hindu that the objective of the corporation was to pool the engineering resources of the government that were scattered across various departments. The resource pool was contemplated in view of a major programme to strengthen school education in the government sector in the coming years. The programme envisaged new school buildings and upgrading the existing ones for introduction of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) classes. Strengthening of schoolsAbout 6,500 secondary schools were proposed to be strengthened under the Centrally sponsored SUCCESS programme. School buildings were also proposed with 12th Finance Commission funds. The corporation would be responsible for establishing infrastructure of the school and higher education, social and backward class welfare departments. It includes school buildings, hostels and staff residential quarters. The work was so far supervised by the engineering staff of various departments such as the panchayat raj and roads and buildings. However, construction of tribal schools was exempted from the purview of the new corporation, as the Tribal Welfare Department had a dedicated engineering wing. Officials explained that the huge engineering wings of the Scheduled Castes and fishermen’s corporations would be absorbed into the corporation. The government has initiated steps to bring all residential educational institutions societies under one umbrella for close supervision. The government notified common admission to 630 schools run by these societies this year.
