Congress seeks more steps to check price rise

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Friday expressed concern over the soaring inflation and asked the government to take concrete measures to arrest price rise even if such steps retarded the growth rate.

It urged the government to convene a meeting of Chief Ministers and Finance Ministers to evolve a coordinated response to inflation.

Party spokesman Shakeel Ahmed told journalists: “Certain measures are bound to affect growth. But the government should now consider measures that will check prices even if they affect growth.”

Attributing the surge in inflation to the hike in fuel prices, Mr. Ahmed called for a coordinated approach. The Centre should also spell out the steps that the States could take to deal with inflation.

The inflation rate could have been higher if the Centre had not intervened and taken steps to rein in price rise.
