Singapore trade team meets Gujarat Ministers

GANDHINAGAR: A Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry business delegation, currently on a three-day visit to Gujarat, on Friday met several Ministers and government secretaries here and discussed various projects of common interest.

According to the Chamber chairman, Vijay Iyengar, most of the projects were at the discussion stage and no deal had been finalised but the delegation would be looking forward to consolidating tie-ups with Indian partners for setting up projects in Gujarat.

Among those the delegation met were Health Minister Jaynarayan Vyas, Minister for Water Supply and Urban Development Nitin Patel, the managing directors of Gujarat Agro-Industries Corporation and the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation.

Keen interest

Mr. Iyengar said Mr. Patel showed keen interest in Singapore’s support for the urban mass rapid transit system, desalination and water treatment plants in Singapore while Mr. Vyas, who is also the Minister for Non-Resident Gujaratis, enquired about the welfare of the Gujaratis settled in Singapore and the possibilities of tie-ups between the pharmaceutical industries in Singapore and Gujarat. The State government had also showed interest in the growth of organic food.

Particle boards

Atish Modi, one of the directors of the Chamber and an Indian entrepreneur in Singapore, held discussions for setting up of a Rs.250-crore project to manufacture particle boards and medium density fibre boards. Made from wood wastes, the eco-friendly project could be set up on wastelands to be provided by the State government. His company has already set up a similar project in Karnataka.

The machinery for the Karnataka project were on its way from Germany and the project was expected to go on stream by October this year, he said. Mr. Atish Modi said he had discussed the project with the Chief Minister Narendra Modi also and he had shown positive interest in it.
