Centre’s ‘hard measures’ have failed: TDP chief

Correspondent

Says ‘economist trio’ lacks practical exposure

Delay in Vattigedda project decried

Better deal to displaced promised

VIZIANAGARAM: TDP president and former Chief Minister N. Chandrababau Naidu has said that the rate of inflation surged to a record high of 11.05 per cent due to “inefficiency” and “lopsided economic policies” of the UPA Government.

At a press conference at Jiyyammavalasa, the mandal headquarters village in the Agency region of the district, on Saturday, Mr. Naidu said “though Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram and Planning Commission Vice-Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia are noted economists, they have no practical experience.”

They concentrated more on financial growth rather than percolating its benefits to the people, he said, and added that the “hard measures” Mr. Chidambaram had promised failed.

On irrigation projects in the district, Mr. Naidu said that work on linking of Vattigedda with Adarigedda had not begun though the foundation stone for it was laid two years ago. The progress on other projects such as Thotapalli, Peddagedda and Jhanjhavathi was at a snail’s pace.

A promise

The TDP would announce a special package to the displaced families if voted to power in the forthcoming elections, he said.

Party Polit Bureau member P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju, district president Y. Ramana Murty and others were present.

Kakinada: TDP Polit Bureau member Y. Ramakrishnudu too deplored the Central Government for its failure to control inflation.

Inflation during the NDA rule was only 1.4 per cent whereas it reached a 13-year high (11.4 per cent) under the UPA rule mainly due to its faulty policies. Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Ramakrishnudu said it was true that the economy was growing at a fast pace but controlling inflation should not be a big task for the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister, who were good economists themselves.

Mr. Ramakrishnudu said that TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu would be visiting the district once again from June 30 to 4 as part of the ‘Meekosam’ tour.
