Getting into NIT becoming tough

Admissions to NITs outside the State will be based on
all-India rank list

BANGALORE: It may not be easy for students from Karnataka to get admissions to any of the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) outside the State, from now on.

Earlier, those who havepassed the All-India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) used to get seats in NITs outside the State on the basis of the State-specific rank list. But this academic year onwards, the selection will be based on the AIEEE all-India rank list.

Decision

Madan Mohan, Director (Technical) of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, conveyed the decision in this regard to the Central Counselling Board on June 9.

Last year, 212 students who did not get admissions at NITK managed to get seats in NITs outside the State. But it may not be the case this year around.

S. Srinikethan, Dean of Academic Affairs of NITK, said, “In the all-India rank list, students from Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand are usually on top. Only a few students from Karnataka feature among the first 600.”

OBC quota

All NITs are re-adjusting their seat pattern, to include 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Classes. Counselling for admissions will begin at all NITs on July 4.
