Avenue for information: Activists of People’s Pulse interacting with the public in Puducherry on Saturday.

PUDUCHERRY: If you were hitherto clueless on how to go about an application under the Right to Information Act, you now have an avenue to get answers to all your queries.

People’s Pulse, a non-governmental organisation, in response to suggestions made by local RTI Act activists in a recent meet, launched a ‘Facilitation Centre for RTI Act’ on Saturday on their premises at 72,Muthumariamman Koil Street.

The Centre would provide free assistance to persons in filing applications and appeals under the Act.

The Centre was inaugurated by Karthikeyan, a leading RTI activist, who has filed a number of public interest litigation petitions based on information obtained through the Act.

Cyril Antony, a former government servant, said the association decided to start the Centre to meet the requirements of persons not aware of the procedures, as they found it difficult to identify the appropriate Public Information Officer (PIOs) for filing their applications.

Recently, Puducherry government notified more than 600 PIOs and a large number of assistant PIOs which was the cause for their dilemma, he said. Various public authorities had not brought out 17 manuals as required under the Act before October 2005.

Publication of the manuals and updating them would help to reduce applications for information, he added.

S. Hemachandran, president, People’s Pulse, said the Centre, to function on all Saturdays, would be manned by experienced activists.
