Exclusive agency for tribals in plain areas mooted

Officials asked to prepare report within two months

HYDERABAD: The government has given the nod for creation of a separate agency for development of tribals in plain areas.

Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has given the go ahead at a review meeting here on Friday with officials of the Tribal Welfare Department. The new entity to be called the plain areas tribal development agency (PATDA), it would cover areas spread in 15 districts excluding the agency districts.

The proposal to set up PATDA would be approved in the next Cabinet meeting, Dr. Reddy told his Cabinet colleague D.S. Redya Naik and other officials. The staff pattern and funding for PATDA would be decided shortly. Apart from tapping funds from Tribal Sub-Plan, the Chief Minister assured additional funds required for the programmes.

Focus areas

Dr. Reddy also directed officials to prepare a detailed project report within two months with focus on providing roads, drinking water, self help groups and horticulture for the benefit of tribals living in plain areas. He asked the officials to utilise the services of consultants to study and identify the habitations with more than 500 tribal population so that they could be considered as gram panchayats to ensure local self governance. There are 9,737 exclusive tribal habitations in plain areas of which 1,505 have more than 500 tribal population. A sum of Rs.200 crore has been provided in the 2008-09 budget for tribal welfare for formation of exclusive agency for tribals living in the plain areas. The total ST population in the State is 50.24 lakhs, of which 27.69 lakhs reside in the eight ITDA districts and the remaining in 15 districts.

The major tribes living in the plain areas include Lambadas/Sugalis, Yanadis, Yerukulas and Chenchus.
