Traffic blocked on highway in Haryana

CHANDIGARH: There was palpable tension in Sirsa district of Haryana on Saturday as a large number of people belonging to the Sikh community blocked traffic on National Highway No.10 in Sahuwala village to protest against the killing of a Sikh in Mumbai on Friday in alleged firing by the securitymen of Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda sect head Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh.

The protesters demanded immediate arrest of the Baba and action against the guilty persons.

They also sought withdrawal of the ‘Z’ security provided to the Dera chief who is already facing trial in Ambala in two cases of conspiracy to murder and one case of rape filed against him by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

According to reports reaching the State Headquarters here, two companies of the Haryana Armed Police were deployed at sensitive places and the senior district authorities reached the spot and managed to pacify the agitators to get the blockade lifted.

Meanwhile, Sirsa Deputy Commissioner V. Umashankar said in Sirsa that there was no tension whatsoever and the protests by the Sikhs at Dabwali and Ellenabad had passed off peacefully. He also convened a meeting of the Peace Committee and urged the members to meet leaders of the sect as well as the Sikh community and urge them to maintain calm and peace at all costs.
