KHAMMAM: Six persons were hurt, one of them seriously, as bus carrying college students overturned near the railway bridge on by-pass road here on Saturday. The bus being operated by a private post-graduate college located on the outskirts of the town, was on its way to the college when it went off the road. Some of the onlookers rushed to rescue the inmates of the bus. The traffic police also reached the spot in time and shifted the injured to the hospital. A major part of the chassis of the vehicle turned into a wreckage. It was lifted by using cranes and the whole episode resulted in a heavy traffic jam on the by-pass road.Swathi, a second year MBA student suffered a rib fracture. She was rushed to the private hospital in the town. Her friends Pavani, Nagalakshmi , Harsha and Navakanth were also treated in the same hospital. The bus had undergone fitness test only a fortnight ago. Student organisations including the NSUI, TNSF and TRSU staged a protest demonstration at the site of accident. They complained that aging buses were being used for transportation of students by various colleges. The protesters alleged that the Transport Department officials also turned a blind eye to the problem which had put the lives of students at stake. The student organisations went on protest in front of the RTA office later in the day.
