Sainik School old boys take a walk down memory lane

Thiruvananthapuram: It was a trip down memory lane for the alumni of the Sainik School at Kazhakuttam, near here, on Saturday. Friends who had come from near and far recalled their days on the campus. Most of them were meeting each other after many years. Old associations were remembered and families were introduced.

The 39th Old Boys Association (OBA) reunion, ‘Sangamam- 2008,’ also provided an opportunity for the old students to remember a valiant friend, a hero who made the ultimate sacrifice in serving the nation. Captain Harshan who went down fighting terrorists in Kashmir was given a befitting memorial on the school premises.

One of the school’s illustrious alumni Lt. General S.P. Sreekumar, Signal Officer-in-Chief of the Indian Army and Senior Colonel Commandant of the Corps of Signals, was the chief guest at the function attended by more than 400 old boys from different walks of life. Prominent among them were Air Vice-Marshal Rajinder Singh of the Southern Air Command, Pangode Station Commander Brigadier Cherish Mathson, and Malayalam film actor Indrajith. Colonel Ajith Kumar, Principal, and Lt. Colonel M.C. Thomas, Registrar, of the Sainik School were also present along with Captain Louis Meprath (IN), president of the OBA.

On his arrival, General Sreekumar was given the guard of honour. He laid a floral wreath at the war memorial and inaugurated the newly-constructed multimedia laboratory in the academic block. The day witnessed the unveiling of a bust of Captain Harshan at the south wing of the academic block. Addressing the gathering, General Sreekumar proudly recalled the courage exhibited by Captain Harshan in the face of enemy fire and emphasised the fact that duty to the nation comes utmost to every soldier. Captain Harshan’s father K. Radhakrishnan Nair inaugurated a pavilion at the parade ground sponsored by the 1997 batch.

Later in the day, General Sreekumar handed over the IT Trophy to Cadet Dinesh Sharma for having secured highest marks in Class 12 in 2007-08. The day also saw friendly cricket, basketball, volleyball and football matches between the old boys and school cadets/staff and sightseeing and games for ladies and children.
