TV, jatra artistes to get State awards

BHUBANESWAR: Like their counterparts of the silver screen, the cast and crew of the small screen and the immensely popular jatra (touring drama troupes) of the State will be conferred annual awards by the State government from this year.

Culture Minister S.N. Patro told media persons that the department of culture would institute 40 awards that would cost the State exchequer Rs. 8 lakh annually. It includes 19 awards for the jatra and 21 for television serials. Like the coveted Jayadev Puraskar conferred for one’s greatest contribution to Oriya cinema, Kabichandra Kalicharan Patnaik Puraskar that carries a cash award of Rs.50,000, would be presented to one of the pioneers of the jatra genre for one’s lifetime achievement. A similar award for the small screen, known as Punyatoya Puraskar, would be presented, the Minister said.

The awards for jatra would include best play, best director, best dramatist (writer), best actor, best actress, best music director, best stage craft manager, best playback singers (male and female), best choreographer, best comedians (both male and female), best child actor, best supporting actors (male and female) besides two special jury members. Similarly, the awards for television serials would include best television serial of the year (Rs.25, 000), best director, best actors (male and female), best story, best music composer, best playback singers (male and female), best art director and best audiographer, Mr. Patro said. Telefilms, children’s films and educational films would also be considered for these annual awards, he clarified.
