Police file cases against KSU activists

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city police registered cases against 20 pro-Congress Kerala Students Union (KSU) activists for disrupting cluster meeting of teachers at Cotton Hill Girls Higher Secondary School on Saturday.

The activists have been charged of disrupting the cluster meeting and trespassing the school premises. No arrests had been made, the police said.

The KSU activists reportedly barged into the classroom in the lower primary section of the school around 12.15 p.m. where the monthly cluster meeting of English teachers was on.

The activists were demanding the withdrawal of the Standard VII Social Sciences textbook which allegedly contained objectionable content.

The activists allegedly destroyed the charts prepared by the teachers and the banners displayed there.

Later, another batch of around 15 KSU activists barged into the cluster meeting of Arabic teachers at SMV Higher Secondary School. The activists asked the teachers to vacate the class room.

Police personnel present at SMV school did not intervene when the KSU activist disrupted the meeting.

The Thamapanoor police said no case had been registered in connection with the disruption of meeting at SMV school.

No police personnel were present at the Cotton Hill school.

Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, who visited the Cotton Hill school, said stern action would be taken against those who disrupted the meeting.

He was accompanied by V. Sivan Kutty, MLA and Mayor C. Jayan Babu.

Later, Mr. Sivankutty and Mr. Jayan Babu led a march to the secretariat to condemn the incident.
