Coal crisis continues

Talcher: The ongoing coal crisis in central public sectors of NALCO and NTPC’s super thermal power station at Kanhia, continued despite intervention by the district administration which appealed to tipper drivers to call off their four-day long strike.

As the drivers went on strike demanding higher payment and provision of social security like provident funds and other facilities, supply to NALCO and NTPc was severely affected.

Sources said NALCO was forced to stop operation of two of its seven units of the captive power plant. As a result the NALCO was producing only 600 mwt of power to run its 720 pots in smelter plants.

NALCO required at least 14,000 tons of coal every day in order to make its CPP units operational. The Navratna company had a stock of only 35,000 tons of coal of which 15,000 tons were buried inside earth. - PTI
