‘State syllabus is competitive’

HYDERABAD: The State, through SUCCESS has embarked upon the target of universalising secondary education, assuming that the aim of universal primary education has been more or less achieved. However, many including eminent academician and MLC Chukka Ramaiah rebuff the claims.

“All the figures are concocted. Let there be a comparison between the enrolment figures and the actual students attempting the exams and the truth will come out,” Dr. Ramaiah challenged.

His obvious reference was to the fictitious enrolments made in the name of ‘Badi Baata’—a fact that also finds mention in the Human Development Report 2007.

With many children remaining to be enrolled in schools, shifting of upper primary sections will go against a child’s constitutional right to elementary education, Mr. Ramaiah says. Opposing the implementation of CBSE syllabus in chosen government schools, he noted that Education was since independence, made part of concurrent list keeping in view the diversity within the country.

“Andhra Pradesh was one among the pioneering States to set up SCERT in line with Kothari Commission’s recommendations. Since then, the State syllabus was revised 20 to 30 times. Our students have been faring better than those who studied CBSE syllabus in competitive examinations. Instances of CBSE students shifting to State syllabus in Tenth Standard are plenty,” he says.
