It’s only management exercise, says Collector

HYDERABAD: Hyderabad Collector Naveen Mittal seems unperturbed by the agitating teachers’ unions that are virtually baying for his blood. His decision to merge schools within the same vicinity alongside the implementation of GO 76 raised quite a commotion among teachers. This, he has done without paying heed to stakeholders’ objections, they allege. However, Mr. Mittal refutes all allegations. He says his was only a “management exercise” aimed at making administration easier. “I toured all the 800-plus schools in the city and noticed that many among them were running with a low student-strength, like the one at Hyderbasthi in Secunderabad had 35 students accommodated in six classrooms and taught by six teachers, while many other schools did not have teachers. The decision of clubbing the schools was only to rationalise the use of infrastructure and staff. This does not mean closure,” he said.

“Teachers oppose the decision fearing loss of their posts. Had the stake holders’ opinions been taken into consideration, I would not have been able to implement this decision,” he said. CBSE syllabus, however, was a state-level decision, he said.

“All teachers have their children studying with English as medium. Don’t they teach their kids at home? Why can’t they do the same at schools?” he said for the criticism about lack of proper training to teach CBSE syllabus.
