Every drop counts: The campaign van that was flagged off in Thanjavur.

THANJAVUR: The District Revenue Officer, M. Karunakaran, flagged off a campaign van to be used for creating awareness of water resources and ways to rehabilitate them from the Collectorate here on Saturday.

The van forms part of the Tamil Nadu Irrigated Agriculture Modernisation and Water Bodies Restoration and Management (TN-IAMWARM) project. R. Ganesh Babu, Executive Engineer, Agniyar division, said that the aim of the project was to get ‘more income for every drop of water.’ The State Government proposed to rehabilitate water bodies and modernise agricultural activities through Water Resource Organisation in coordination with other agriculture-oriented departments under World Bank aid.

The scheme would be implemented at all 63 sub-basins in the State in a phased manner. In Thanjavur district, it was implemented in Agniyar sub-basin. Along with Water Resource department, agriculture, agriculture engineering, horticulture, agricultural marketing and animal husbandry departments and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University would take part in the scheme.

In Agniyar division, five anicuts, 28 tanks and 3,540 hectares of ayacuts would be rehabilitated.

S. Asokan, Executive Engineer, Cauvery division, PWD, and Sanjeevi Ram, Executive Engineer, Grand Anicut canal division were present.
