Report sought on school students being forced to fetch water

CHENNAI: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has ordered the Ramanathapuram Collector to enquire into a matter relating to teachers of a government school forcing students to fetch drinking water in pots, and send a report within two weeks.
A Bench, comprising Chairperson Justice A.S. Venkatachalamoorthy and Member K. Mariappan, took suo motu cognisance of a news report in a Tamil daily.
The teachers of the Government Higher Secondary School at Keezhathooval near Paramakudi asked the students studying in standard IX to fetch water from Magindi, a kilometre away.
The students had to take the Paramakudi-Mudukulathur Road, where there is heavy traffic, on bicycles.
The Commission also ordered Chief Educational Officer to enquire and report within a week.
