BHUBANESWAR: In a major move to streamline the academic and research programmes of the State-owned Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Odissi Research Centre (ORC) and elevate it to a centre of excellence, the State Culture Department has constituted four committees recently. Sources in the department informed that the committees on dance and music - vocal, instrumental and percussion - comprising experts from the respective fields will formulate a revised syllabus for teaching and research at the two- decade-old centre. Eminent scholar and former Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi president Dhirendra Nath Pataik, former ORC chief executive and eminent dancer Kumkum Mohanty and Central Sangeet Natak Akademi’s executive council member and noted dancer Aruna Mohanty have been taken into the committee for dance. Similarly, noted music composer Gopal Chandra Panda, researcher and writer on Odissi music Kirtan Narayan Padhi and harmonium exponent Purusottam Parida are in the committee for music, it was learnt. The committees will meet periodically to deliberate on the existing academic patterns of the centre and develop a syllabus to suit the contemporary trends in Odissi dance. With a growing demand for training in Odissi worldwide, the centre plans to attract students from all parts of the globe with improved infrastructure and revised syllabus to project it as an institution of international standard, the sources pointed out.
