Proposal to start engineering college in Payyannur Search on for land for Regional Nursing Institute KANNUR: Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy has said that the 20th applied science college under the Institute of Human Resources Development (IHRD) will be started at Neduvambram in her constituency of Payyannur this academic year itself. CoursesAnnouncing this at a press conference here on Sunday, the Minister said that the college, affiliated to Kannur University, would initially offer B.Sc. Electronics, B.Sc. Computer Science and B.Com. with Computer Application. The process of opening admission to 24 seats in each course was now under way, she said adding that the number of seats would be increased as and when the university decided to enhance the number of seats. The Minister said that the proposal for setting up the applied science college at Neduvambram materialised in a short time, thanks to identification of land for the college and the intervention of the Education Minister. She said that the Public Works Department would take up the construction of the college building under the scheme that allowed the department to carry out a project worth Rs.1 crore in a constituency as per the local MLA’s recommendation. The classes would function at the temporary facilities being arranged at Junior Technical High School, Neduvambram, she added. Inauguration soonIHRD Director V. Subramaniam, who was at the press conference, said that the formal inauguration of the college would be held soon. Arrangements were under way for setting up laboratory and classrooms in the school. Teaching and non-teaching staff required in the new college would be posted through transfer from other institutions of the IHRD, he said. Ms. Sreemathy said that there was also a proposal to start an engineering college in Payyannur. Six acres of the 25-acre Girls Model Polytechnic at Payyannur would be utilised for developing the college, she said. The proposed IT park in Eramam village in her constituency had been sanctioned because of no delay in identifying the land required for the project. The Madayi panchayat, located in the Payyannur constituency, had also promised to hand over land for a proposed industrial training institute there, she disclosed. Initiatives had been taken to find land here or at Thalassery for establishing a Regional Nursing Institute sanctioned by the Centre. Five acres of land had to be identified for developing the institute for which Rs.10 crore had already been allocated, she said. The Cabinet had approved the proposal for forming a State Institute of Medical Education and Training modelled on IHRD. It was also decided to start three nursing colleges in the State under the institute, she said. Central teamMs. Sreemathy said that a Central team had visited Kozhikode the other day to inspect the 25-acre land for setting up the Regional Institute of Paramedicals, a Rs.90-crore project. Decision had been taken to renovate and reconstruct at least half of the government nursing hostels in the State. Steps were also on to fill vacancies of doctors in government hospitals.
