BELLARY: Residents of Bellary city were surprised on Sunday morning, when they saw some debris lying at the centre of Gadagi Chennappa Circle, where a 40-year-old clock tower once stood. Nobody knew who had ordered the demolition of the clock tower. Residents were unable to contact the municipal officials as it was Sunday. The tower clock was built by former MLA Allum Karibasappa in 1964. Over the years, the tower had become a part of city’s identity. A visibly upset Allum Veerbhadrappa, former Minister and Congress leader, told The Hindu that he was at a loss to understand why the tower clock had been demolished. “I am unable to contact officials to know the reasons for its removal,” he said.
