Sending across a message: Minister for Horticulture S.K. Bellubbi singing a folk song at the inauguration of a consumer awareness programme in Bijapur on Sunday. Bijapur: The folk song recital by Minister for Horticulture S.K. Bellubbi to mark the inauguration of a street play on consumer rights awareness took people by surprise here on Sunday. The play was organised jointly by the district Information Department and the Food and Civil Supplies Department to create awareness among consumers about their rights, at the main bus terminal here. Mr. Bellubbi, who is also the district in-charge Minister, was supposed to inaugurate the programme by beating the drums. However, he surprised everyone by reciting the song which highlighted how consumers are cheated by businessmen. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Bellubbi said that the role of consumers was vital in the economic system of a nation. However, consumers were being cheated by traders, he said. What had added to the problem was that the consumers were not aware of their rights, he added. Mr. Bellubbi said that the Consumer Protection Act provided for a three-tier system of redressal — at district level, at State level and at the national level. He stressed the need for active participation of common man in programmes launched by the Government. In-charge Deputy Commissioner S.M. Sonnad, Information Officer Manjunath Sullolli, Deputy Director of Food and Civil Supplies Department N.H. Sulibhavi were present.
