Widespread rain in northern and central parts of State

WELCOME SIGN: Children reach to pull down the shade in a bus during a sudden shower in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday. Kerala, where rainfall has been deficient so far this monsoon, is waiting for the skies to open up.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A bank of rain-bearing clouds from the Arabian Sea crossed the shoreline on Sunday morning bringing widespread rain in the northern and central parts of Kerala by afternoon.

Meanwhile, Idukki district, most crucial for the State’s power generation sector, was still waiting for the season’s first significant downpour.

The districts of Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam, where rainfall had been very scanty so far this season, too received only a few showers though the signs of rain were in the air since morning on Sunday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday that the current weather conditions could lead to an increase in rainfall along the west coast of the country. The IMD forecast rain and thundershowers at many places in Kerala, with some parts of the State receiving heavy rainfall in the next 48 hours.

Monsoon clouds were building up in Southwest Arabian Sea and moving in a caravan towards the tip of the Indian Peninsula.

The IMD’s ‘numerical weather prediction models’ indicated a “strengthening of the [pressure] gradient and cross equatorial flow of monsoon clouds over the Arabian Sea.”

This might, hopefully, lead to a change in the monsoon behaviour over Kerala in the week ahead.

Perinthalmanna in Malappuram district received 6 cm of rain during the 24 hours ended at 8.30 a.m. on Sunday. Kochi Airport received 2 cm of rain and Thalasserry, Kozhikode, Kasargod, Ottapalam and Thrissur received 1 cm of rain each.
