UGC team visits DU to review quota status

NEW DELHI: A sub-committee of the University Grants Commission visited Delhi University this past week to review the status of reservation for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the appointment of teachers, non-teaching staff and admission of students.

The four-member committee interacted with the University officials as well as the administration of three colleges – Shri Ram College of Commerce, Miranda House and Daulat Ram College – this past Thursday and Friday.

The members checked the teaching and non-teaching rosters of these colleges, besides checking the University documents on whether timely appointments from the reserved category were being done.

They also visited the Arts Faculty on the North Campus where registration for admission of candidates from the SC/ST categories was being done.

On Thursday, the Committee interacted with University officials and representatives of the Delhi University Teachers’ Association and the SC/ST Karamchari Association.

“We put forward various decisions and activities of the University that reflected its discriminatory attitude. For instance, the University appoints faculty members to handle its administration like Dean and Joint Dean. No single appointment is made from the SC/ST reservation except a Liaison Officer. There are several colleges that are not following the roster system properly,” said DUTA joint secretary Sanjay Kumar, .

He also submitted a memorandum to the Committee highlighting some issues.

“Harassed ”

“The SC/ST candidates seeking admission in undergraduate programme are harassed in the University system. The reverse side of the Class XII mark-sheet of all the candidates is embossed with a stamp that says ‘University of Delhi Special Cell (SC/ST)’, which remains as a lifetime symbol for a candidate. This practice should be banned,” added Mr. Kumar. This was the first round of the Committee that will visit all the colleges in the near future to ensure proper implementation of the reservation policy.
