KSU chief launches fast in jail

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Students’ Union (KSU) State president Hybee Eden, on Sunday, launched an indefinite hunger stir in the Thiruvananthapuram sub-jail demanding an end to police atrocities on striking KSU activists, withdrawal of the controversial Class VII textbook and against commercialisation of the education sector.

In a statement here, the KSU State committee, announcing the hunger stir, strongly protested against the “barbaric” manner in which the police confronted agitations by student and youth organisations. It alleged that besides harassing the family members of the striking KSU activists through midnight raids on their houses, the police beat up peaceful protestors and booked them under false charges. Most of those injured on their heads came in for organised attacks by policemen.

The State committee alleged that a section of the police force was behaving like goons. The KSU workers were denied their rights as they were arrested in violation of Supreme Court guidelines, it said.

Suspension sought

The committee demanded that all policemen involved in the attacks be suspended and court cases charged against them.

It said the government had betrayed students and parents by failing to ensure government fee in merit seats in admissions to self-financing professional colleges.

It said it proposed to go ahead with its agitation till the State government withdrew the controversial textbook and the teachers’ handbook.
