Congress Legislature Party meet today

Bangalore: The meeting of the Congress Legislature Party will now be held on Monday. The meeting will discuss the shortage of fertilizers and the farm suicides.

According to sources in the Congress, the MLAs, who would be in the city to attend the legislature session starting on Monday, wanted the meeting to be postponed by a day.

Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday visited Shimoga and Shikaripur taluks. He met farmers who are agitating for the supply of fertilizers and the family members of those who committed suicide.

The ruckus created by the outburst of Siddaramaiah against the high command for striking an understanding with the Janata Dal (S) for the Rajya Sabha elections has died down, although temporarily.

Mr. Siddaramaiah is touring his Assembly constituency. The sources said the former Deputy Chief Minister had denied reports of deserting the Congress and joining the Bharatiya Janata Party. He would attend the CLP meeting on Monday, they said.

They denied that Mr. Siddaramaiah had been summoned by the high command to discuss the recent developments, including his statement on the party affairs.

One leader, who was instrumental in bringing Mr. Siddaramaiah to the Congress, however, felt that he was not going to be made president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee.

The high command always wants a person loyal to the party as PCC president, he added. At the same time, the party was not ready to lose a leader who had clout over the backward classes, especially the Kuruba community in the State.

A former MP, who joined the Congress recently, ruled out Mr. Siddaramaiah joining the BJP, though the subject came up for discussion among his friends, sometime ago. Another leader said that the high command might even replace Mr. Kharge with Mr. Siddaramaiah because of the reported criticism that the former had failed to give proper guidance to former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh and Prithviraj Chavan, party in-charge for Karnataka, on the Rajya Sabha and Council elections.
