Workers block traffic

Staff Reporter

NAMAKKAL: Workers engaged under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme blocked the traffic on Mohanur - Paramathi Velur road, near here, on Saturday alleging that they were offered less wages.

Workers, who were engaged in removing silt from a water channel taken up under the scheme, approached the Manapalli panchayat office to get their wages.

They alleged that the officials at the panchayat told them that they would be given only Rs. 40 as wages a day instead of Rs. 80 fixed by the government.

Annoyed, the workers blocked the traffic on the road. Revenue officials tried to pacify the agitators. But they refused to negotiate with them. They decided to give a complaint to the Collector before withdrawing their protest. Traffic on the road was affected for about an hour.
