It must be done in such a manner that it should benefit the people “Schemes have ushered in a socio-economic renaissance in State” TARAMANGALAM: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) will never hesitate to take any positive criticism in right spirit. But the criticism must be in such a manner that it should benefit the people and the State, said Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam. Distributing free colour TVs, free house site pattas and other social welfare schemes at a Ilavampatti village near here on Sunday, the Minister, making a veiled reference to the recent ouster of Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) from the DMK-led alliance fold, said that allies in a front should behave responsibly. The Minister detailed various welfare schemes of the Government since the early Seventies. It was Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi who had sanctioned various welfare schemes for poor and women particularly. The schemes such as Rs. 2 a kg rice, colour TVs, free land pattas, marriage assistance, widows, old age and destitute pensions, education grant for graduate and unemployed youths and maternity assistance schemes were the brain child of him, he said. Pension to womenThe Chief Minister has also announced in the recently concluded Collectors conference that a monthly pension of Rs. 400 would be given to women who have not married up to the age of 50 and are living with their parents, he said. The other social schemes included the free power supply for farmers, reservations, lifting of ban on the employments in government departments, new recruitments, infrastructure development etc. These schemes that have ushered in a socio-economic renaissance in Tamil Nadu have also endeared the DMK Government with poor and downtrodden. This has caused a sort of irritation in the minds of those few who are opposing anything and everything for the sake of opposing, he said. Later he also distributed TVs and other welfare schemes at Selavadai village. Collector N. Mathivanan presided. Mettur RDO K. Santhi and others spoke.
